504 - The 504 Plan is a plan developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives accommodations that will ensure their academic success and access to the learning environment.
Academic Teams - the middle school model is based on the formation of academic teams, where a group of core teachers (typically math, ELA, social studies, and science) share a group of 60-100 students. This model is intended to give the students a more personalized educational experience where the team can provide social, emotional, and academic support to each student. Advisories - An advisory is an organized group including one adult and a small number of students. The group meets regularly outside of normal instructional time. Possible outcomes of the advisory could be: providing each student with at least one positive relationship with an adult in the building; create peer groups for each child; provide each student with ways to be successful academically and/or socially; and promote communication between home and school. AIG - Academically and Intellectually Gifted Benchmark - a common, formative assessment that is typically administered either quarterly or at the midpoint of the school year. CDA - common district assessment College and Career Ready - the goal of the school is to provide each student with an education that prepares them for life after high school graduation, which could include either readiness to enter a collegiate program or enter the job force with the skills necessary to begin a life-long career. Common Classroom Assessments - common, formative or summative assessments administered by a grade-level PLC for a particular subject Core Classes - mathematics, english/language arts, science, and social studies comprise the core classes Class Dojo - this is a software program that can be used to provide students with positive incentives and rewards for good behavior and academics. The program can also be a valuable communication tool between the school and teacher and the student's family. EC - Exceptional Children Electives - classes outside of the core classes. Students/families have choice in which of these classes a student will enroll. Electives typically last one semester. EOG - End of Grade test. In middle school, students take EOGs in math and reading each year and in science in the 8th grade. ESSA - Every Student Succeeds Act. ESL - English as a second language Extracurricular Activities - school-sponsored activities outside of the academic classes/curriculum. These may include school sponsored athletic teams or school-sponsored clubs. IEP - Individualized Education Plan LEP - Limited english proficiency MTSS - Multi-tiered system of support NCFE - North Carolina Final Exam. This is a summative assessment that students take for social studies each year of middle school and for science in 6th and 7th grade. PBIS - Positive Behavior Intervention System Proficient - performing at or above grade level |
